Gateway GT5252 - Desktop Computer Customer Review

I switched from DELL to Gateway (and from an Intel to an AMD Athlon CPU) when I tried out this machine and I've never been happier. The machine is extremely fast and reliable.
The first reviewer didn't specify why they hated this system, so I put no stock in that review.
I know the stores couldn't keep these on the shelves. For only 9.99, you couldn't beat the deal you got on one of these systems. Everything in the case was the latest and greatest available in September '06 when it became available. That is with the exception of the 128MB video card. For the time period it was released, it should have had at least 256MB or maybe 512MB of video memory.
My friend at Circuit City says they have had 0 returns on this model, which is extremely rare of any brand (that includes both defective and non-defective returns).
It is an amazing machine. Yeah, you can always buy a better machine a few weeks after any machine that you buy.

So I was looking for a good computer for school, something that could handle HD video editing, 3D modeling, gaming, ect. I've never been a huge fan of Gateway so when I stumbled across this I thought it looked cheap and for the specs, under priced. Which caused me to hesitate at first, and also because it didn't seem very popular and I couldn't find many reviews. That being said I went ahead with my low budget in mind and bought the computer. I can honestly say I've never been more impressed! It can handle all my HD editing no problem at all, any program starts instantly(maybe slightly exaggerated but close ;), and for you gamers out there, it runs Crysis and Call of Duty 4 on MAXED settings without skipping a beat!!! I'm also a sucker for Samsung monitors and HD TVs, so given the fact this computer doesn't come with a monitor gave me a great excuse to buy a samsung, and I have given the link below to the specific one I purchased. If you are looking for a monitor, I would definately recommend the samsung, it has amazing picture quality. By amazing, I mean pristine! And it comes with all the connections to plug right into the computer!
I would not recommend anything else!

The Basics
Founded in 1998 and acquired by Gateway in early 2004, eMachines today is one of the largest vendors of PCs sold through U.S. retailers. With the T2862 Desktop PC, eMachines targets entry-level and undemanding consumers who want a desktop computer but can't justify the price of a high-end model and probably don't need one anyway. Featuring a cost-effective yet reasonably powerful CPU, minimal memory and mediocre 3D graphics performance, the unit is not designed for a top-level business environment or gaming den. But if word processing, personal finances, email and Internet surfing and CD burning are your priorities, the eMachines T2862 is a sensible and extremely affordable solution.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Many entry-level desktops utilize "budget" processors such as an Intel Celeron, and that is indeed the case with this model. But this particular processor is a new and recently enhanced version of the venerable Celeron, nicknamed the Celeron D and carrying 256 KB of Level 2 cache and a 533 MHz system bus for perceptibly faster performance than Celerons manufactured prior to 2004. This is the second fastest Celeron currently on the market, a 2.66 GHz version that doesn't approach the raw data-churning speed of a high-end Pentium 4 but certainly holds its own against lower-end Pentiums and AMD Athlons.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. eMachines has partnered this unit's processor with 256 MB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM main memory, the minimum recommended allotment for a modern PC. Thusly, the eMachines T2862 is not ideal for demanding multitasking sessions or ultra-complex applications in its stock form, though users may upgrade the memory (at additional cost) to a whopping 2 GB.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with "dedicated" video memory is preferable to a controller that "shares" the system's main memory, as it better handles complex procedures. The eMachines T2862 is equipped with an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 video controller that is integrated on the motherboard and shares 64 MB of the system's main memory. Thusly, the unit is not intended for anyone who regularly works or plays with demanding 3D animations such as those found in the latest high-end games, unless they first purchase and install a separate graphics card. A display screen is not enclosed, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today's many alternatives.

Sound
Audio is produced via an AC 97-compatible chip integrated on the motherboard. AC-97 is today's most accepted entry-level PC audio standard. Though not as sophisticated as most standalone audio cards (its audio specs aren't as good and it supports limited speaker configurations), this integrated chipset is perfectly adequate for most stereo applications. eMachines will also enclose a pair of small desktop speakers for your listening enjoyment.

Hard Drive
The built-in 60 MB hard drive sports enough space for a typical home or home office situation or student setup. However, if you regularly load large applications, save large files, and maintain a sizeable multimedia or music collection, you may need to upgrade this drive, transfer files to a compact disc to free up room, or add another hard drive.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing world. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can enjoy all of the above plus watch the same big budget DVD movies you watch on your home entertainment system. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can also "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of CDs).

The eMachines T2862 features a DVD/CD-RW drive that allows you to install applications from CD, play and burn music and data CDs, and play DVD movies. DVD burning is not possible unless you upgrade or replace this drive.

Connectivity and Expansion
Though designed for the budget conscious, the eMachines T2862 nevertheless sports all the standard amenities, and then some. Communication options include an Intel PRO 10/100Mbps integrated LAN for high-speed Internet and email access and a standard 56K modem for low-speed dial-up service. For reading memory cards from devices such as digital cameras and PDAs, the system features an 8-in-1 Digital Media Manager. And, with no less than five high-speed USB 2.0 ports at your disposal, you'll have plenty of places to plug your plug and play peripherals. eMachines has not included an IEEE 1394 FireWire port, most commonly used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders.

Operating System and Software
The system features a surprisingly generous software package headed by Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system, Microsotf's Works 8.0 productivity suite, Microsoft's Money 2004 financial center and several useful multimedia and music utilities.

This was bought back in late 2005 as a package deal: Computer, CRT monitor, and Lexmark Printer for about 0. A great deal. I ended up expanding to 2GB of RAM, which helped speed things up an eliminated some error messages. The only real beef I have with this computer is the sound. I noticed that, from the start, there was an echo in everything played out the speakers. This becomes pretty annoying. All the audible Windows programmable events have the echo. I imported and stored some MP3's on the hard drive, then played them using RealPlayer. I got the same echo. In fact, it actually sounds like what you're listening to (with regard to stereo) is L-R rather than L+R. That is, it sounds like what you're listening to is the difference between the stereo channels rather than the normal stereo sound tracks. I contacted eMachines and they recommended upgrading to another sound board () which sounds like a bogus solution to me. I looked through the control panel settings for audio devices and I don't see anything that controls an echo effect or L+R/L-R options, so it looks like I'm going to have to spend and hope a new sound board resolves the problems. Other than that, it's a functional computer system for a very reasonable price.

I have a refurbished version of this machine. For the price(new or refurb) you can't beat the performance of this machine. Mine came with a 500w PS and the 1gb ati 4850 video card. Out of the box The only problem was a blinking cursor in windows explorer. That fixed and a bios update to turn on the i7 overclocking and its good to go.

I just got my Gateway FX7020 a few days ago. I am very pleased with this unit. I wanted as much bang for my buck on a decent gaming machine as possible, and this was in my price range. FIRST let me say - this is not a high end gaming computer, but it has a lot for the price. 3 gb of ram, 500 gb hard drive, Nvidia 8800gt graphics card. It's nice. I've read a lot of negatives about the 400w power source, but I don't know enough about the technical aspects of the machines to know if this is a big problem, or a nitpick. I priced a dell at 1100$ with much less capability, and a 320 gig hard drive. My biggest complaint is getting used to Vista...

It's very quiet, looks a little odd (trying to hard to look "cool) comes with keyboard, small speakers, tv tuner remote for media center, etc. Hooked right up to my internet via ethernet. I play warcraft online and averaged around 15 frames per second and with this I have 60 frames per second in every place in the game i've been so far, not just the places w/ abnormally high frames per second. It has a dvi port - which i have hooked up to my monitor and it is very nice. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

-Does not include a ton of worthless software

Cons:
-On board integrated graphics
-Button to eject DVD tray must be pressed HARD
-Does not include hard copies of OS or system recovery disks (these must be burned at your $$)

It is a nice quiet compact system. Boot time is noticeably faster (about a minute) over my previous Vista computers. Moreover, there is not a lot of preinstalled worthless junk ware. Although, the optional software (MS Office, Norton, etc) that is there are trail versions only. There is not any good tactile feel to the DVD eject button and must be pressed rather hard. I was very surprised to find no hard copies of Windows 7 or any recovery disks. For these, the system prompted me to insert my own DVDs and burn copies on my own (something EVERYONE SHOULD DO). The on-board integrated video is the weakest link in performance. Windows performance score is 3.6 due to graphics. There is a PCI-expresssx16 slot open. I ordered a video card (which MUST be a LOW PROFILE card) and will update this review on how it affects performance. Over all so far it seems to be a solid computer and a good experience. Time will tell more!

It brought up my gaming graphics score from a 3.4 to a 5.8! You may have to fiddle around with Aero and tone down some of the bells and whistles to gain improvements within windows 7 environment. Also this card has a fan. The fan adds a little more air flow within the case but also adds noticeable fan noise. So to maintain the stealthy quiet of the original system...get a card with no fan.

I recently bought the Gateway GT5662 and honestly, this is a very good computer. It runs programs effortlessly, the AMD Phenom has great power. The computer only uses about half the RAM most of the time, so you can continuously run more and more programs without hassle. The only problem I've ever had with this computer would be Vista. It ALWAYS seems to have a problem some how. Granted, Vista looks nice and is smooth running when it is done loading. But, there are still problems needed to be fixed. The computer comes with pre-installed software like most PC's now-a-days do. Data Transfer from USB drives and other devices are amazingly fast. When I bought this computer I only payed about.. 0 for it. So, this really is a great mid-range PC for the buck. Definitely a great purchase.

I have the heftier model, 6 GB RAM; Dual-Core; 1TB HDD; running Windows 7 Home Premium. This computer and OS were made for each other. If you are excited about the release of Windows OS 7 as much as I was, you are going to want this machine or extremely similar.

I knew what I wanted, and all I needed was the tower. I looked all over the net for something as reliable as eMachine (my previous one lasted an incredible 5 years and still took a beating with heavy loads all the while running fast). I couldn't find a suitable eMachine running Win7, but knowing that Gateway builds those and Compaqs, I decided to spend the extra cash for this system.

Setting aside aesthetics with its awesome placement of the power button, USBs and Digital Card readers; black glossy finish with chrome accents; uniquely designed keyboard and optical mouse, this computer runs fast and stays quiet. Start up time seems to decrease with every reboot, peripherals plug and play instantly, HD video and audio output make this perfect for anyone connecting this your HDTV (up until now I had yet to fully utilize my HDTV for what I bought it for almost 3 years ago), and did I mention it looks pretty sitting next my desk?

I don't have a million bucks to buy top of the line stuff, but this system sure puts me up there with and above the fat cats who spent 4 times as much as I did. Kind of makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

The Basics

Hard Drive: The 200 GB hard drive (7200 RPM) is average in size compared to other media-centric desktop PCs. It provides a good size for a wide range of software applications and a generously sized digital audio library as well as room enough for editing digital home video.
Processor: AMD's Athlon 64 3500+ processor is built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. BTX Technology

Me a computer pro and lemme tell ya, this machine rocks. Don't be afraid of Vista 64, welcome to the 21st century. Everything works flawlessly. Keyboard and mouse are cool and check a Gateway monitor. Absolutely no problems at all. All you have to do is unpack it and plug it in. Up and running in minutes with dual monitors. Great on-line customer support, monitoring software and free downloads. If you don't know what you're doing but insist on playing with it until it's wacked build yourself a recovery CD from the Start menu. Otherwise, sit back and enjoy this baby. The 64-bit O/S + quad core processors are gonna serve you for YEARS to come. Makes your neighbors jealous ;)

Actually came with the 9750 AMD cpu Quad (not 9100e). This is a significant upgrade to the entire computer. The 9100e CPU was slower and a little buggy. The OS is Vista 64 bit. Should be able to play many games even with the stock graphics. So far, even business 32 bit applications are working nicely ie Microsoft Office XP, etc (not Outlook). Used an old WiFi USB adapter with older 32 bit driver and it worked fine! (there was a scare that a lot of 32 bit software and drivers would not work - I don't know but everything I threw at the OS worked fine). NOTE: older 16 bit programs do not work on a 64 bit OS. You can run them thru a VM (virtual machine) installed on your 64 bit computer - which is another topic.

With a more powerful GPU and PSU upgrade this would be a better gaming machine too! Some of the GPU's (geforce 9600 low power model - runs off PCI express slot and does not need separate power plug) might be used without an immediate PSU upgrade - this has a stock 300 w PSU. ( I have installed a 9600 on a desktop with only 250 w PSU and it is working without problems. One way is to measure power consumption of your computer is to use Kill-o-watt - it will give you an idea of your base power consumption - and the real state of how much power your computer is using in watts. Run some test programs that stress your system and/or Crysis video game and measure power consumption. While I have done it, you may not want to risk it and it is usually better to upgrade the PSU to be safe).

I have built multiple computers over the years and was considering building another. This systems beats anything I could have done (in total cost including shipping). Stock system is a bargain and to upgrade should not be too difficult. Comes with 4 g memory and with Vista 64 bit you can use all of the memory up to a max of 8gb (this computer's limitation; with 32 bit Windows can only use around 3 gb no matter how much memory is installed). Price just dropped.....I don't know if all the DX4200-9's are now including the 9750 AMD - sounds like they are closing this line out so "get 'em while the're hot".
